Dr. Ye is an associate professor and chairperson in the field of concrete modelling and materials behavior in the Microlab/Section of Materials and Environment within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands., and a guest professor in the Magnel Laboratory for Concrete Research, Ghent University, Belgium. He is also a gust professor in Chinese Building Academy, Tongji University, Southeast University, South China University of Technology. Dr. Ye received his PhD (TU Delft, 2003 with honor) in Concrete Structures and Materials. His research interests focus on the properties of cementitious materials, i.e., early age hydration and microstructural development, permeability and durability. Recently his research interests extend to alternative cementitious materials. He is the author/co-author about 100 journal papers and 120 conference contributions, editor/co-editor of 6 conference proceedings and Chapter contribution of 8 books.  Dr. Ye is a senior RILEM member and fib member. He is member of RILEM Technical Committee TC-DTA, TC- ICC, TC-ATC, TC-SHC, and TC-SAP and fib committee of 8.10 and 8.12.

The sustainability of infrastructure projects is becoming increasingly important issue in engineering practice. This means that in the future the construction materials will be selected on the basis of the contribution they can make to reach sustainability requirements. Geopolymers are materials based on by-products from industries. By using geopolymer concrete technology it is possible to reduce our waste disposal and to produce concrete in a environmental-friendly way. An 80% or greater reduction of greenhouse gases compared with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) can be achieved through geopolymer technology. However, there are limited practical applications and experience. For a broad and large scale industrial application of geopolymer concrete, challenges still exist in the design and implementation during construction.

This lecture will introduce the GeoCon bridge project which was recently carried out at Delft University of Technology. The main goal of the project was to develop a geopolymer concrete mixture and to upscale it to structural application. The outputs of projects provide input for development of recommendations for structural design of geopolymer based reinforced concrete elements. Through a combination of laboratory experiments on material and structural elements, structural design and finite element simulations, and based on previous experience with OPC concrete, knowledge generated in this project provides an important step towards a “cement free” construction.
